Evaluation Question 1

In what way does your media pr oduct use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

-         Our task was to make a promotional music video and release it after designing the digipak and magazine advert.

We decided to do the song Sticks ‘N’ Stones by Jamie T as our video. The typical conventions of an indie music video is that quite a lot of them seem to be in black and white, the props used are cigarettes and alcohol, the locations used are usually run down, quite urban and we have random shots of action like Ash sitting in a trolley and getting pushed, as this gives the video an indie feel as its quite rough and messy. In our video, some of our shots fitted in with the indie theme, as they were in quite run down locations for example the train track (brick walls), the back of tescos and under a bridge in Lincoln which all carry out connotations of working class and urban Britain. We could have used more obvious run down locations and could have developed this more, like getting shots with graffiti in the background, but overall I feel that we met generic conventions of indie with regards to the locations.

In our research videos we also noticed that some of the people wore chequered shirts, so we also did this, but used more than one shirt, for example different coloured shirts. Ash’s hair was quite messy when we were videoing as again, it gives the feel of an indie genre, being messy and unorganised.

We also used quite a few props in our own video for example alcohol and cigarettes. Again, we have gone along with the stereotypical indie theme as people automatically presume people who are in with the indie scene smoke and drink. Also looking at different album covers for different indie bands, we noticed that a lot of them did contain people smoking or drinking in them. The shots we included this in was when we filmed Ash Scott drinking near the train track as the lyrics said ‘cheap to get pissed..’ and videoed Aaron Scott smoking.

One convention we challenged from a typical indie video was that we filmed in colour and noticed normal indie music videos are often in black and white, and we haven’t got any shots in black and white. The reason we did this is because we didn’t particularly like the idea of using black and white as we wanted to make our music video a bit different to what you would associate with a normal indie video.

When thinking about how we edited our video, the song was quite upbeat and fast so we had to do shots that were quick to fit in with the music. Some indie videos were full of fast takes like ours, for example ‘Florescent Adolescent’ by Arctic Monkeys. Jamie T’s real video for Sticks ‘N’ Stones was also very fast so we felt as though we had to try and make it look as professional as possible, so kept up with the speed of his real video. We had to speed up some of the shots to make them fit in with tempo of the song as the shots were good, but didn’t look right at first.

However, there were a number of conventions we used when making our digipak’s. We looked at different digipak’s from our chosen genre (indie) and it helped us get an idea of what we needed to make ours look like. We looked at an Arctic Monkeys CD case and it was black and white, so we decided to do this as well, as it looked good and it fitted in with the indie theme. We also added Jamie T’s record label to the back of the digipak along side the barcode and the iphone scanner. We chose an indie looking font called ‘ALL AGES’ and we had to download it and do our writing on Photoshop to get it to work properly. The reason I think it looked ‘indie’ is because it’s a quite rough looking font. We then added the Jamie T website to the digipak because we noticed most CD’s had websites on them. Another convention we challenged was that we put 5 song titles on the back of our digipak instead one 3 for a single or 10 – 12 for an actual album. There wasn’t a particular reason we did this, we just thought it looked good on the back of the digipak because we had a black wall on the background with a white patch to write on, and the song titles fitted in well on the white background.

Our magazine advert fitted in well with the typical indie theme, as it again was in black and white like the CD cover, but we edited it on Photoshop to make it in the effect threshold. We included the website on the advert as well as the record label. We looked at a few different magazine adverts and noticed that different magazines had commented and rated how good the album was. So we chose to use the magazine ‘NME’ as this type of magazine is where you would normally find an advert for artists like Jamie T. There wasn’t any conventions that we challenged and I feel that we have fit the advert in well with the indie genre.

We also used brand identity when making our digipak’s and magazine advert because we wanted them to match the video slightly. The magazine advert is the same as the back cover of the digipak, because we thought it would look effective as we used the effect threshold on photo shop to edit it. I then added an image of the front cover of the digipak on to the magazine advert, so you could definitely make out that the advert went with the CD. We got this idea from Ed Sheeran’s magazine advert. The front cover also fits in well with our video, as most of it was filmed at the train station, and the cover is an image of Jamie T (Ash Scott) walking on the tracks, and because what he is wearing in the image matches some of the clothes he wore in the video. We also used the same font through out the making of the digipak and magazine advert to make the brand identity more obvious.

Final Magazine Advert

This image is of our Magazine Advert. It is the same as our back cover of the Digipak because we liked the idea of the writing going in the white box, but we did put an image of the front album cover on the bottom left, so people knew it was the poster for our digipak. The reason we have used the font 'ALL AGES' is because we thought it fit in well with our indie genre and the reason the writing is in black and white is because it contrasts well with the black wall in the background. The reason we didn't put a release date on our poster is because we thought it would be a good idea to say it was out now, so people could get the CD straight away. We used the record label 'Virgin' because they have a lot of money and are a well known label, therefore, people may think that our album would be good. The image we have chosen to use, like I said before, has been used on the back of our album but the reason we used it on our advert is because we thought the way the image was positioned looked good because he is looking down on the writing and the reason it is in black and white is that it fits in with the indie genre. Finally, when thinking about brand identity, we used the image on the back of our digipak as our magazine advert so people knew for definite that it was for our album. We also used the same font as again, it fits in with the indie theme and people will recognise it as our design. I think that our magazine advert would probably been shown in the magazines 'Q' or 'NME' because these magazines tend to be aimed at indie and alternative type music.

analysis of two magazine adverts

Ed Sheeran

This is Ed Sheerans album advert from Q magazine,I like this design as it'simple but you're still drawn to it. I think the orange is good as it stands out against the black background. I also like the idea of his album cover being in the bottom left corner of the advert, because the advert doesn't necessarily match the actual album cover, but doing this gives the viewer a chance to see what the album is too. The picture of him is good as it catches your eye, even though it's in black and white. The way he is looking down kind of makes the person looking at the advert look down to, to notice the writing. I also think how the writing is in the middle is effective because again, it catches your eye.

The Libertines

This magazine advert is promoting The Libertines DVD 'Boys In The Band', I think that it has a bit to much going on and you don't really know where to look, but I think that all the colours look good together apart from the blue writing across the middle. The name of the band is right across the middle of the magazine advert, so it stands out to the person looking at it. I think the picture is slightly strange as you can't really see what is going on it, as the writing is in the way.I really like the font, and I think it fits in with typical indie theme. There are a lot of good conventions of a typical magazine advert in this one, like the 'Out Now' and the information at the bottom.

Magazine Advert Brief

Next I need to produce a magazine advertisement for the digipak.

Final Digipak

This is a photograph of our final front cover for the digipak. As you can see, it has some of the general conventions for an indie digipak. We downloaded a font as we felt the one we used (ALL AGES) would be more appropriate and look more indie than the original photoshop fonts. We put a parental advisory sign on the bottom left of the front cover, as our video contains some slightly bad language. I like the composition of where Ash is, to the left, as it looked a lot better than having him directly in the middle. The reason we chosen to have our digipak in black and white was because when we were doing our research we noticed that quite a few indie bands have their digipaks in black and white. It also looked better in black and white than colour, as in colour there was to much going on.

This image is of the back inside cover, (the disk impression) we thought this image would be suitable as a lot of our music video is filmed at the train station. We had to think of a different type of still shot to do though, as our front cover is also of the train station, and didn't want it looking too repetitive, so we came up with the idea of a close up. Again, this is in black and white to fit in with the indie genre. We didn't put any writing on this part of the digipak because we didn't think it would look write.

This is my favourite part of our digipak as it has all the conventions of a typical indie album cover. I edited the original photograph on photoshop and changed the effect to threshold to give it the kind of cartoon look it has. Again, we used the font 'ALL AGES' so the font on the back cover matched the front cover and because it fits in with our genre of music. We added a record label, barcode and iphone code to the bottom left of the image as well as the website and copyright protection. The reason we didn't number the tracks on the this part of the digipak is because we thought it would look to organised and not typically 'indie', it gives it a kind of edgy look.

This final image is of the inside front cover. We had to come up with something that fitted the typical indie theme. This is why we put a crushed can and a lighter in the photograph. I like that the image has a lot of texture and detail to it as it's a close up. Again we edited this photo but changing it to black and white and then increased the contrast to make the image stand out more and look more sharp. The reason it is in black and white is so it matched the rest of the digipak and keep it in with the typical indie theme.

How the digipak research has developed our design ideas

Our ideas for the album cover are that we are going to do the front cover in black and white, and it is going to be a photograph of Ash (as Jamie T) walking along the train track. We downloaded a font off the internet, as we felt it fit in with the style we are going for. The album and artist names are going to be on the right of the front cover. On the back of the album we are taking a photograph of Ash again, but this time have him shying away from the camera, and positioned to the right of the cover, looking down. The track list will be to the left of the back cover in white or black writing depending on if the background is black or white. For the inside of the digipak, on the dick impression we are having a close up of the train track with stones near it as it fits in with our song (Sticks 'N' Stones). On the inside cover we have decided to take a photograph of some crushed beer can, and cigarette ends as these type of things are mentioned in our song, and we have some shots to do with them. They also fit in with the typical 'indie' genre.

This is what our inside cover should hopefully look like, as you can see there are crushed cans and cigarette ends.

This is an image of our front cover, with Ash walking down the train track, the font that the album name is in, isn't what we are using but the one we are using was to hard to draw.
This is our back cover. It's an image of Ash shying away from the camera. we are editing this image to make it in the threshold mode as we think it would look effective and fit in with our genre
This is a photograph of what we want our Disk Impression to look like, it's a close up of the train track, we might make it more close up though
This photograph is of our whole digipak.

Example of a full Digipak

This is an example of a full digipak. You can tell from the acoustic guitar that the genre is going to be quite indie and the quite dull, natural colours fit in around the indie theme. There are two different fonts used, one for the band name (Oasis) and another for the track list. I like the idea of this as its quite different but on my digipak I would probably match the fonts. The image on the front is quite simple, but still catches your eye because of the bottom of the guitar at the top of the album cover. I like how the writing on the front cover matches the writing on the spine, because you would be able to know which album its from. You can't really see the disk impression on this digipak, but you do notice how the colours fit in with the front and back, and again are not the most bright colours, fitting in with the indie theme. You can see a record label at the back, to let the person buying the album know who the band is with, because some people tend to buy albums with known record labels, as it usually means the band are quite good.

Ancillary Task 1 - Digipak - Genre Conventions

Genre conventions

To help get an understanding of artwork and designs from the Indie genre, I looked at the following three album covers:

The first thing we notice is the image of the artist (Jamie T). He is positioned slightly to the right of the cover and is turned away from the camera, making him seem like he is shying away from everyone. The colours in the image are quite dull, there all dark greens, black and browns. This fits in with the 'indie' theme well - away from the mainstream/limelight. As you can see the cover is set in some type of pub, as there are bottles of beer in the background, again fitting in with the typical indie theme. The name of the album/singe stands out as its in green against a white background, the same as his name, which is in black.

I think the way the album name and the artist name against the white background is good because it stands out as there in red and black and makes the album eye catching. The image is in black and white, giving it no particular time scale, and making it look quite simple and mysterious in a way and the band are all playing with guitars so it fits in with the indie type theme. I like the way the band are positioned, as you can see all of the members and its quite an unusual way to position them.
Again, this album cover is in black and white, giving it a timeless quality, makes it look gritty and rough and making it seem mysterious. The title sort of blends in with the background but still stands out as its black on a white background. The title is positioned to the left of the album cover so you can see the entrance of the alley way. They image itself is of some sort of alley way, which looks rough and like its in a poor part of a town. There is graffiti on the door on the left, which makes it look even more rough. I really like this album cover, even though it is quite simple and doesn't show an image of the artists.

Ancillary Task 1 - Digipak Conventions

Digipak conventions

Front:
Album name
Artist name
Picture (usually at least one of the artist)
Parental advisory

Back:
Record label
Track listing
Website
Copyright
Extras
Lyrics
Bar code
Further Images (perhaps of the artist again)

Ancillary Task 1 - Digipak

A digipak is a style of CD or DVD packaging, used to promote a particular artist. My digipak will have between 4 and 6 sides including front cover, reverse cover, spine and disk impression.

Mood board

This image is of the mood board we made. It is full of images and conventions of Jamie T's genre (indie). It includes images of The streets, The libertines, The kooks etc. We have also included some photo's of the style of clothing that we want our main character to be wearing in our video, and some potential props like cans of beers and packets of cigarettes. Finally, we have taken some of our favourite lyrics from a few songs (and our chosen song) to make the mood board look more interesting.

Editing Screen Shots

I really like this shot as it's fun an interesting. It's quite hard to tell but it is a shot of Ash getting pushed and spitting his cup of tea out. Typically, this shot goes with the lyrics 'Pat on my back, and a swig on my brew...' It took quite a while to film this part as there is miming just after him spitting the tea out, so getting him to sing the song at the right time was slightly difficult.

Editing Screen Shots

Today we filmed Ash in the toilets as the lyrics said 'It's the only place but home I feel relaxed enough to crap' So we thought adding this shot would make the video more humorous. A problem we faced with doing this shot was that it was videoed in the girls toilets, so we had to check the toilets were empty and make sure no girls came in while he had a boy in there.

Editing Screen Shots

Today we filmed this part of the chorus. It took us about an hour and a half because we had to lay each stick and stone down and take a single shot of them. We had to speed this shot up quite a lot to make it in times with the song itself. I do think this is a really interesting part of the video, and its very creative.

Editing Screen Shots

We filmed this part off the music video just outside of school. We edited this part to make the actor run forward, reverse and run forward again past the camera. This shot goes with the lyrics '3 fingers down and the other 2 up...' This to me is a good clear shot and although it's a simple mid shot, the way we have edited it has made it interesting.

Editing Screen Shots

Today we went to the train station again to film the part of the video that goes with the lyrics 'The boys across the platform...' This is one of my favourite shots we have done so far as it's got a comedy factor to it and is a interesting long shot as people are on both sides of the platform.

Editing Screen Shots

Today we stayed behind after school and went up to Willingham Woods to film this part. We hadn't originally planned on doing this particular shot, but after filming it and speeding it up, it looked really good and went with the rest of the video well. I do like this shot and think it is a bit to different to what most people would think to do.

Editing Screen Shots

This is a shot of Ash doing his buttons up. The reason we added this in to our music video is because the original shot was to long, so we had to put this over the top of it to make it look more interesting. We decided to speed this shot up as it went better with the rest of our video.

Editing Screen Shots

Today we went to the train station and filmed this part of our music video. The lyrics say 'to see a friend I hadn't seen...' Which is why we have a two shot of the main character and his 'friend'. We also sped up this shot to make it look more interesting and go in time with the music better, because our song is quite fast.

Risk Assessment

We had to complete a risk assessment for our video, as some of the things we are doing could be slightly dangerous. Doing this ensured that everyone is as safe as possible during shooting.

Shooting Schedule

This is mine and Izzy's shooting schedule. It explains where we are going to be doing some of our shots, and who will be in each one. We have also wrote the time and date we are going to be filming so that the people in our video can easily understand when we need them. It also helps keep us in order of what parts of the song we need videoing next. We have put our props list on this for each shot we do, so we can be organised and know what we are going to need for each shot, we can be prepared for each day of filming.

Actors, Props, Locations and Clothing

Actors
Ash Scott
Aaron Scott, Tom Burley, Tom Knights etc (backing people)

The reason I decided to use Ash as the main character in my music video is because I think he is a really good actor, and acts a bit like how a typical indie lad would. He already has some checkered shirts and other types of costume that we could have used in the video, so it will make it a lot easier.

I have chosen to have 3 or 4 young lads in the background of the video in some shots of the video to try and make it a bit similar to Jamie T's because in his video he has his friends messing around and having fun in some shots.

Locations -

Mattus carpark.
There is an Alley Way in this carpark which would look good in the video with Ash running through it when he is singing the chorus. The reason I think it would look good is because its quite a confided space and I think would contrast with the part of the song Ash will be singing here, in a way.
Market Rasen train station
Quite a lot of our videoing will be done at the train station in Market Rasen, as i think the lyrics in our chosen song have a lot to do with being at a train station, and some other parts in the song we think would look suitable being videoed here. 'I took a train...'

De Aston School
We have a few shots of Ash and co, performing in the school, for example the shot of him when it says 'pat on my back, swig on my brew...'. The different shots are all over the school, to give us a few more locations to work with. We might also do some shots in the sixth form common room because they're sofas and tables in there, so we could maybe make it look like Ash's house.

Willingham woods
The reason I have decided to do some filming at the woods is because it is a little bit different to the rest of the video, (I will be challenging typical generic conventions). There is also a lot of room to get running shots, and to film Ash and his friends having fun with his friends.

Props

To fit in the the conventions of an indie person, I am hoping to be able to use cigarettes and cans of beer in the video, because that is what some people associate with indie. The cans of beer obviously won't be full though.
I think that we could also end up using typical props like mobile phones or Ipods just for cut away shots and ones where Ash isn't singing.

Target Audience

This is George, he is 18years old student currently studying music at college.

Demographics

Gender - Male

Age Range - 15 to 25

Ethnicity - White

Sexuality - Heterosexual

Socio-economic - Working class

Profession - In a band

Psychographics

His favourite bands are The Streets, Jamie T, Arctic Monkeys and The King Blues. One of George's preferred music channels is NME, which he put on when he gets in from college. Out of School time he is in his own band and preforms for people quite a lot. George also plays guitar and when he isn't doing music, he enjoys going to parties with his friends and having a drink. He isn't particularly religious either.

Questionaire results

Graphs

These print screen shots are the results of our questionnaire, on the results is shows us that most people prefer R&B music, but we didn't want to do something to common, which is why we didn't follow the results. The next preferred genre of music was rock, followed by pop. So our type of music wasn't actually that popular with the audience we asked. We then asked what people liked seeing most in a music video, and it was obvious that a lot of varied shots was necessary, which is what our music video will hopefully consist of. Some people also said they preferred been able to follow a storyline  in a music video, which ours doesn't really have, because our chosen song (sticks 'n' stones) doesn't really have a storyline to follow. We then decided to ask how often people watched music videos or listened to music, so we could get an idea of what people would expect to see following today's videos. Nearly everyone said they listen to music everyday, and 2 people said they never do, which actually shocked me, as music is everywhere these days.

questionaire

These images above are of the questionnaire we did to find out what our target audience would be. We have decided it will be for young adults because some of the lyrics aren't suitable for young children and it doesn't really strike me as something and older person would listen to. In our results we found out that quite a lot of people did like indie music, but most people said pop and R&B were their favourites. We didn't want to do a song that was really common to most people, as they would expect our video to be similar to the real one. We also found out that a lot of people liked seeing shots mainly of the band/singer in music videos but also have a bit of a storyline as it catches peoples interest.

Analysis of another student video

The first thing I really like about this music video is the group dancing shots in the street because of the way they are all in the same clothes and doing the same dance. It fits in with the genre of the song and the tempo of the music really well. These group dancing shots are also full of different camera angles, so it keeps the audience interested in the music video. I also like how this video is full of performance shots of the singer in all different locations as again, it fits in with the genre of the song itself. This music video is also full of cutaways, for example at about 2 minutes 59 seconds, there is a cutaway of the performers feet as she plays the piano. I think cutaways like this keep the video interesting, and I will probably use cutaways in my music video. There are also some interesting shots used like slow motion, when the glass is smashed on the floor, I think this is a really good idea because it shows frustration well and you can really understand how the actor is feeling. One thing that I am not very keen on is the black and white all the way through the video, because it's slightly dull and in my opinion, adding a little bit of colour in might have made the video that little bit better. Finally, I really like the range of shots from about 3 minutes 45 seconds onwards because they swap from slow motion (of her in the bath) to shots of the dancers, and I think the slightly quicker paced shots add a really good effect to the over all music video.

Shot list

We have written the shot list on our story boards, but here is an example of some of the shots we are doing in our music video.

Opening shot - Low angle mystery shot of the main character walking and kicking stones.

Second shot - Focus Pull of a group and main singer at the front. 'When there's no-one left to fight... out on the town trying to find trouble' (Lyrics)

Third shot - Wide angle shot of two people walking to each other. '...a friend i hadn't seen since i was drinking under age'

Fourth shot - Close up of someones mouth with a cigarette, were speeding this up to very fast and doing it ten times. 'I was ten a day...'

Fifth shot - Wide angle shot. (stood on train track so you can see both platforms) 'How'd you say, little shit...'

Sixth shot - Tracking/pan shot of some bottles of cider. 'white lightning...'

Seventh shot - Mid shot of main singer. 'We wore checkerd season wallabies...'

Eighth shot - Long shot of people running. '(chorus) When there's no-one left to fight...'

Jamie T information

Jamie Alexander Treays (born 8 January 1986), known by his stage name Jamie T, is an English singer/songwriter from WimbledonSouth London. He is currently signed to Virgin Records. Virgin Records began in the early 1970's as a small, independent label based in London. Today, Virgin Records is part of EMI, the third largest music company in the world. A wide array of artists call Virgin their recording home, including: Richard Ashcroft, Beenie Man, Ben Harper, Blue Man Group, Blur, Chemical Brothers, D'Angelo, Daft Punk, Fatboy Slim, Perry Farrell, Gang Starr, Gorillaz, Janet Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Rolling Stones, Tina Turner and Yanni.

Storyboards

This is a photograph of our storyboard for the music video. It explains and shows some of the various shots we are going to be doing within out video. We have also written numbers next to the shots as we have also written numbers on the lyrics sheet so we can see what shot goes with what lines in the music video, we did this so it would be easier for us, and the actors to understand what will be happening and when.

The reason I have uploaded an image of this close up of our story board is because we think it's a good shot to show. It's one off the most unusual shots we have done, as it shows a lot of fast takes of the words 'sticks 'n' stones' made out of sticks and stones. The reason it will look effective is because a lot of time and effort will go in to doing this take.

Permission

song choice

We have decided to do the song 'Sticks 'n' Stones' By Jamie T, for our music video.
We decided to use this song for our music video because we wanted to do something that would be fun to film and me and Izzy also thought we had lots of good ideas that would fit well to the lyrics. However, we did come across an issue which was that some of the language in the lyrics are quite bad, which we asked our teacher about and we agreed wouldnt affect anything. I also think we could maybe make the video quite humorous as there are quite a lot of paths we can take with this song.

When there's no one left to fight, boys like him don't shine so bright,
Soon as I see the dust settle, he's out on the town tryin' to find trouble.
When there's no one left to fight, boys like him don't shine so bright,
Soon as I see (LIGHTWEIGHT PRICK!) the dust settle, he's out on the town tryin' to find trouble.

I take a train again away from shame and blame a city pained to see, a friend I hadn't seen since I was drinking underage.
I was a ten a day, how'd you say, little shit, white lightning, heightening all my courage, quick wit.
We wore checkered season wallabies, buttoned shirts and whiskey, mutton dressed as lamb, a fan of bands like The Jam Jam Jam Jam,
I don't know who I am, he said I dunno if I can, I said yeah man, you can-can.

When there's no one left to fight, boys like him don't shine so bright,
Soon as I see the dust settle, he's out on the town tryin' to find trouble.
When there's no one left to fight, boys like him don't shine so bright,
Soon as I see the dust settle, he's out on the town tryin' to find trouble.

Drunk and being sick, I feel like shit, I gotta quit.
I hope I haven't missed the last train gonna be stuck in Hampton Wick,
With the boys across the platform shouting "lightweight prick!"
I'm a featherweight champion, cheap to get pissed, wish Candy were here with me, she'd deffa deal with it, tell 'em all to shut their mouths and go suck their mommas dicks, coz she ain't no she ain't that low, three fingers down, or the other two up, and I'll sing this proud.

Runnin' with believers, no time for fever, and I haven't got time for you either, with your sticks n' stones, sticks n' stones, I take 'em home on my own.
Runnin' with believers, no time for fever, and I haven't got time for you either, with your sticks n' stones, sticks n' stones, I take 'em home on my own.

As I travel down the track all my memories flood back.
We were runnin' at ease from enemies, and rushed back to your momma's flat, it's the only place but home I feel relaxed enough to crap, I know it sounds crude, but there's something in that.
How's danny doin'? Hear he's high flyin' and that, stockbroker in the city with a lady and a baby.
And Fee, is she free from the demons she had? Was it two months clean, routine to relapse.

She smoked all of your weed that's why the loved ones out to leave,
Why when you take the lead they stab you in the back 'till you can't breathe,
When you're bleeding on the floor, and no one hears your call at all, she screamed out to the party 'you are sheeps and cattle!'

I was hanging out with Louie in the shooting gallery, when the news got through to me about you and Jeremy.
Pat on my back, and a swig on my brew, you're still my friend, it's impossible to hate you.
Cradle to the grave, I know we always misbehave, people latch down and then they rain on our parade.
Girls we love leave when we want them to stay, like today, remember, what shall we say?

When there's no one left to fight, boys like us don't shine so bright,
Soon as I see the dust settle, let's go out and find some trouble!

Runnin' with believers, no time for fever, and I haven't got time for you either, with your sticks n' stones, sticks n' stones, I take 'em home on my own.

Research

Before we plan our own video, we need to research other Indie videos to make sure ours fits the conventions of the genre.

I think this video is good because it has a good use of close ups of the singer, which we will probably do in our video, and i think how the sing is on about a riot, but they're hitting each other with pillows is good as it is very unusual. I also think that the opneing to the video with the drum kit lit up looks effective, and it's a good way to introduce a music video. The video is full of fast and interesting shots to make the person watching, want to keep watching. The way the different people in the video are grabbing pillows at the start of the video looks effective as it makes the watcher wonder what is going to happen. There is a range of different shots to do with the story line and artist so there isn't one particular part to this video, like in some you get all storyline. At 2 minutes when they say 'i predict a riot' the people in the audience start hitting each other with the pillows, and a bit later on feathures start flying everywhere so it adds a bit of humour to the video, as there talking about a riot, but using the pillows.

The reason i have decided to put this video in my re-search is because i don't think the video goes very well with the song, although it still has a good effect, as you're not expecting it. I like how within the video they have still images of certain things, as it adds a little bit extra to the video which we might do in our music video. I also think the setting of this music video is interesting as it seems to be in a run down buliding, which would possibly be a good setting for my music video. I also think the video is very interesting as it seems as the clowns are against the normal people. The music video is also full of fun and fast takes, to make it seem more entertaining. The thing i like most about the video is how it flashes back to the people in the video, when they were children, and one of them has always been dressed up as a clown. At the start of the video we are introduced by a shot from inside a car looking out of the front window, which i think is an interesting shot to do, as it's a bit different. I really like the contrast between the clowns and the old people fighting, as it's very strange and unusual, and you think about what it has got to do with the song. There is a lot of slow motion shots in this video when they're fighting which makes it easier to see what is happening in the video, and it looks good. This video is purely storyline, as there are no shots what so ever of the person singing, I also think it is quite theatrical.

I really like the black and white near the start of this video, as it gives a different effect and makes shots of houses look more interesting. I also think the the camera shots from behind the glass when they're smashing it looks really good, and i've not really seen shots like this, our video would have a better effect if we did someting like this because it would be different to what most people would think of doing. I think this song would be really excellent to do for our media video, as it has a lot of potential shots and ideas. Finally, i also think that the way the clown near the start is brightly coloured but everything around him is dull is interesting as it sort of confuses the person watching the video. The opening shot if of a clown and the singer and it looks funny as the clown is really bright and Jamie is dark clothes, but in the video, the clown looks really  depressed and the singer jumping around and singing, so it's a good contrast as you'd expect it to be the other way round. I really like the group shots because it looks like there having fun with the video and it makes the person watch it enjoy it more. At 2 minutes we see some shots that have been sped up which looks good, and i might do something like this in my music video. I think that the way the video goes from day and night also looks quite effective as you can see the difference between how they act in they day and night and I think it fits in with the lyrics 'let's go out and find some trouble'as you imagine them running round and causing trouble in the night shots as they are drinking, smoking and acting more roudy. This video again is a mixture between shots of the singer and shots to make a story. The reason i think this is because there are shots of him singing but then there are shots of him messing round with his friends.

Straight away in this video you notice the special effects, which we might use in our video because its different to most vidoes, we won't be using special effects all the eay through though as i think it gets a bit boring after a while. I like the close ups of the singer again, and the jolted effect of the man drinking a pint, but other than that i don't really like this video as it seems to repetitive. Over all though i do think all the bright colours look really interesting, but i don't understand properly what it has to do with the song. At 41 seconds we see a shot looking down on the band, and it is also in quite normal colours, which goes well with the next shot a few seconds later as it looks directly on to the band on the stage and is in blue and purple colours. I think that this video is mainly shots of the band, but does a few every so often of cars and other things. It is quite hard to see what is happening in the video because of all the special effects and I do think it has got to many special effects in it. Also, i really like the first shot of the band with the guitarist playing his guitar, and the shot is close up.

This song is possibly the one we are doing our music video of. I like how there are two different types of people talking in it like they are arguing, because it looks effective and there is a good contrast between both characters. I also think that the simple shots of 'Tim' on the sofa look good as he manages to make the video look interesting and funny by the choice of props used. The shots of the old people are effective because they don't go with the lyrics of the song. This adds an element of humour to the video. We might do something like the drinking scenes in our video as there are many story lines you can follow from this. I also like the shot of the pool balls, as the camera is pretty much level with the players and it reminds you of actually playing pool. The opening shot to this music video is off a pub sign about glasses been taken home, and straight away we get a feel of an average pub. This is interesting because the next shots are of someone who is drunk and getting aggitated in the bar, I think it looks good because there are old people just sat in the pub having a beer, and its quite funny. I really like the contrast between the drunk and the druggie as the one on drugs seems very sarcastic and relaxed where as the one who is drinking is kicking off. When one of the characters is talking there are a few shots of the other one acting the opposite. Most of the shots of the one drinking are of him talking to camera, so it looks as though he is having a conversation. This video is a mixture between storyline and band shots because the lead singer is playing both characters, so he is talking in it, but he has made the video so that you can see him singing/talking but still have something entertaining and funny to watch. I do really like this video, and it doesn't get boring as there are so many different shots in it.
